After a thorough two weeks in the city of Calgary, riders Clayton Vila, Sean Jordan, Charlie Owens, Tom Warnick, Cam Riley and Justin Norman finally finished up their rail trip in Alberta. Manning the camera was Alex Martini who has been driving around Canada for the past 4 months, working on his Canadian citizenship transfer. Following a 19 hour drive from Boulder, the boys arrived in the city and started setting up rails immediately. Despite having almost no snow to work with, the crew salvaged as much of the snowbanks as they could to make shit happen.

Halfway through the trip, the crew had to slow their role due to an injury that rider Justin Norman had sustained. After stepping to a heavy dub kink with a significantly high drop on the side, Justin got caught up on one of the gaps in the rail and fell off early, landing a near 15 foot drop to his back. With no snow protecting him, Justin took the brunt of the fall to pavement on his pelvis, breaking it in two places. After everyone helped Justin to the hospital to get checked out, the crew went back to work, happy that Justin wasn’t hurt as bad as he was, but also bummed of what just went on. Get better soon Justin!

So amidst the late night shenanigans going down here in Boulder, the crew has been accumulating a plethora of shots for the upcoming movie, NetWork. Seeing as though Boulder lacks the welcoming of snowfall for its winters, the boys got after it as quick as they could. Along for the session were riders Charlie Owens, Tom Warnick, Clayton Vila, Sean Jordan, Shea Flynn and Cam Riley as well as Nick Martini who was behind the camera. Although the option of partying with sloppy biddies was hovering over everybody’s mind, Stept stayed on point and got work done. Here are some pics to show what the clan’s been up to.

Nick Martini- A Blown Knee and Dew Tour *VIDEO*

My name is Nick Martini, and 2 weeks ago I tore my ACL. For some reason I always knew I would get injured skiing but never expected to hurt one of my knees. After having a sick summer at hood, and practicing all fall in Colorado, I could have not been more excited going into the first dew tour. After taking three practice runs through the course, I tried a trick that I had been doing all day, landed backseat, and twisted my knee. I skied to the bottom of the course, took off my skis, and paced back and fourth for about 20 minutes trying to convince myself my knee was fine. I saw two doctors that day that both informed me my ACL was fine, and my injury was only a bone burse. It wasn’t until the next day when I had an MRI that I learned my ACL was blown.

A whole winter of plans immediately vanished. I went from having everything, to nothing.  I soon began to realize the gravity of my situation. No skiing until summer, moving out my house in the mountains, enrolling for school for the spring, contract changes, canceling flight reservations and trips, and surgery; were some my immediate concerns. At that point I realized the only way I could get through my situation was to keep a positive attitude and come back stronger than ever.

My first step was scheduling surgery. Most patients spend anywhere from 2-4 weeks doing pre-op physical therapy when they tear their ACL as bad as I did. This is to condition your knee and regain a range of motion, which will result in a faster post-op recovery. Luckily, after I tore my ACL, my knee was still healthy enough to operate on immediately. I had surgery three days after my accident at the world renowned Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado; a 30 minute drive from my house.

about to go in for surgery

There are a few options when choosing where to get the replacement piece for your ACL, the common being, from your hamstring, from your patella tendon, or from a cadaver. Due to my age, and how damaging skiing is on your knees, the doctors at Steadman decided that a patella tendon graft would be the strongest option for me. I got to the hospital at 9:00 AM and was able to leave around 6:00 PM, with a knee the size of a football (american style), and pocket full of painkillers.

After a rough night of trying to sleep I found myself at physical therapy at 9:00 AM, with a women cranking on my leg as I sat there in agony. From that moment on I have spent at least 3-4 hours a day rehabbing my knee.

I am currently in boulder filming for the new Stept Movie, and working on some new edits. Check out the first video of many to come below…
